Theft from Motor Vehicle – Crime Prevention Advice
Theft from motor vehicles is often opportunistic, with offenders targeting vehicles that appear to contain valuables or are left insecure. Taking simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk.
Secure Your Vehicle - Always lock your vehicle, even if leaving it for a short time.
Remove Valuables - Do not leave items on display. Take valuables with you or lock them in the boot before arriving at your destination (so you’re not seen doing it).
“Hide It or Take It” - If you must leave items in your car, ensure they are: Out of sight (e.g. glove box or boot) Covered where possible
Park Smart - Park in well-lit, busy areas with natural surveillance. Use secure car parks where possible. At home, park in a garage or on a driveway if available.
Protect Tools & Work Equipment - Tradespeople should: Remove tools overnight Use tool safes or lockboxes Consider additional security such as deadlocks or alarm systems
Stay Alert - Report suspicious behaviour around vehicles to police. Look out for people trying car door handles or peering into cars.
Reporting If a crime has occurred, report it via: 101 (non-emergency) 999 (emergency or crime in progress) Provide as much detail as possible, including times, locations, and descriptions
